The Timid “Terrorists”

December 9, 2010

Some Simple Points of Fact:

*In fact, WikiLeaks has only posted 960 out of the 251,297 diplomatic cables they claim to have  in their  possession.

*Every one of those was only posted after they had first  been published by the New York Times, The Guardian (of London) and/or Germany’s Der Speigel.

*WikiLeaks asked  the U.S. government for help in  redacting them, to ensure no one’s life would be put in danger or serious national security matters breached.  The U.S. government refused.

*WikiLeaks since then has worked cooperatively with the newspapers to eliminate revealing information that might jeopardize national security or put any specific person’s life in danger.

*Only such redacted,  carefully edited cables have been published either by the press or by WikiLeaks to date.

*Over 850,000 people already have “top-secret clearance” in the US to legally access these documents.

*Think about that the next time you hear that Julian  Assange is  an America-hating monster, a  diabolical  “terrorist” with “blood  on his hands.”  Notice the people saying that often are the ones that really do have blood on their hands.

*In today’s political atmosphere, Bob Woodard, & Carl Bernstein’s  investigative journalism exposing the Watergate scandal  in the early  1970s would get them branded “domestic terrorists” and hustled off to Guantanamo, never to be heard  from again.

Or am I being naive to hope that somehow truth still matters, at least a little bit?
